Usually files are stored on a disk of some sort. Disks are the little 3½ diskettes (that you can pop in and out), CD-ROMS, or hard drives. Hard drives are a little mysterious to most people because they are seldom, if ever, seen. Its a little box inside your computer case.

Files are organized on your disks in folders. Since disks usually have hundreds or thousands of files on them, its nice to have a way to store them so you can find them when you want to use them.
